Spelling
Students use this procedure for practicing the spelling of Regular Words. Regular Words are words that follow our spelling rules and progression of lessons in the Take Flight curriculum. This method helps students recognize the sounds in the word and having learned the ways to spell the sound, they apply that knowledge to spelling the word.
A helpful procedural chart is just below as a visual reminder of the steps involved in spelling practice.
Sight Words, High Frequency Words, or Instant Words may not be Regular Words. An additional method of spelling practice for these words is offered below and demonstrated in, Spelling Practice - Instant Words..

Handwriting - Cursive
Handwriting - cursive handwriting is a skill that often makes written expression easier for dyslexic students. The flow and connectedness help with spacing and legibility. It also reduces reversals. Please help your student assume good posture and pencil grip, and practice forming the letters correctly.
RAP - repeated accurate practice
The purpose of this practice page is accuracy. It relates directly to the sound/symbol introduced during the day's lesson and helping the brain recognize the orthographic pattern. Listen to your child read the page, and provide feedback if mistakes are made.
Instant Words
Instant words are those words that appear with high frequency in written text. Instant recognition of these words has a direct impact on reading fluency. Please listen to your child read these words. He/she should be able to read them easily by the end of the week. If an error is made, please correct it. Save these pages and use them to review the words periodically.
Oral Reading Log
Listen to your child for at least 15 minutes daily. You may also read to your child, or let them listen to books on tape. This is an opportunity to provide encouragement and feedback to your child's oral reading, and to model good reading. If the classroom teacher requires reading minutes, those can be counted here as well.
Code & Read
Your child may bring home a sheet of words to code and read. Verbally expressing the coding as the student marks each word helps reinforce the code and its meaning. Once a word is coded, the student reads the word before proceeding to the next word.
Your child may also bring home a page that includes sentences to code and read. The sentences for homework will be indicated on the sheet. After the child codes the sentences, ask him/her to read them to you. Correct any errors in reading a word if/when it occurs.
